# The Golden Pocket — lesson

Gym heading: Situational awareness. Written before the code (Sep 8 2026), from the trader's own framework in the Aug 30 2026 transcript (docs/gym-module-golden-pocket.md). The teach screen shows this text; the answer key implements the rule in it and nothing else. Distances are in M everywhere. Harness, confidence, persistence, and reveal format follow stop-vs-noise; the bars before the impulse come from point-at-the-bar's generator v2 (the pre-line regimes, by way of structure); the impulse leg and the retracement are what this module adds. The leg is built the way the premium-and-discount module builds its impulse: the swing that started it, the swing that ended it, both marked.

Choices made where the order was silent:

- The retracement is measured on the last close, as a fraction of the leg: 0 at the swing that ended the impulse, 1 at the swing that started it. Wicks don't count. The fraction is read and shown at three decimals, so the number on the screen is the number the rule compared.
- The pocket is inclusive: a close at 0.62 or at 0.705 of the leg is IN THE POCKET. PAST THE 886 needs a close beyond 0.886; a close exactly on it is still alive and reads SHORT OF THE POCKET.
- Between 0.705 and 0.886 reads SHORT OF THE POCKET, as ordered: past the pocket, short of the 886, the idea alive and the location gone. The reveal says so, with its own takeaway line. The share of SHORT reps built in that band is a config (drill 0.35, holdout 0.40), so every session carries a few.
- The three answers come up a third each (config). Some closes sit a hair from 0.62, 0.705 or 0.886 on purpose (config share); the reveal shows the numbers either way.
- SHORT reps retrace 0.30 to 0.60 of the leg (or the band above); PAST reps 0.89 to about 1.08, so some go through the swing that started the leg. A retracement that had not reached 0.30 is not built: the question is asked once price is into the leg.
- The impulse goes up or down, half each. The bars before it are generator v2's pre-line phase (rotation, leg, or mixed, at the family's shares), drawn the same way for every case. The leg's length in M, the leg's bar count, the retracement's bar count and the chart's bar count (40 to 60) are each drawn per rep from one range whatever the case, and the chart's vertical frame (the room above the leg's end and below its start) is drawn per rep whatever the case, so the pocket band's height on the screen carries nothing. The harness checks all of it.
- The retracement's bars are drawn whatever the case, so a deeper retracement is a steeper one. That slope is the answer itself, not a tell: the level it reaches is on the screen. The harness reports the overlap of the retracement's net pace across cases and requires the size of its bars to overlap. Revised the same day after the first harness run: the retracement's bars are drawn wider than the opening's (config: 1.2 to 1.7 times the range draw, per bar), so the bodies a deep retracement needs sit inside them; before that, a PAST rep's bars ran a few hundredths of M bigger than the others' (4.2 standard errors from the pool).
- In a SHORT or IN THE POCKET rep no earlier close went beyond the 886: the chart's history agrees with its verdict. In a PAST rep earlier closes may already have been through it.
- The level values are not printed on the rep. They are on the reveal.
- The next 20 bars are drawn with outcome rates that are config constants and are never shown; the reveal says what price did, in M from the last close, and nothing about how often.
- Soft clock 8 seconds: one close against a shaded band and one line.

Persistent header: **"Training your eye for the pocket, and for the line past which there is no trade."**

## Before you look for the trade

- **The impulse** — A move that starts at one swing and ends at another. Both are marked on the chart: the swing that started it and the swing that ended it. The distance between them is the leg.
- **The retracement** — How far price has come back into the leg, as a fraction of it, measured on the last close. Take the same two swings that define the impulse and measure the retracement between them.
- **The levels** — The levels that matter are 0.5, 0.62, 0.705, 0.788 and 0.886. The band from 0.62 to 0.705 is the golden pocket: deep enough that the crowd chasing the impulse is offside, shallow enough that the move is still intact.
- **The 886** — The 0.886 is not another level. It is the invalidation. If price closes beyond the 886 and pushes on, the retracement has stopped being a retracement and the original idea is dead. Not a worse entry — no entry.
- **The rule** — On the last close: retraced less than 0.62 of the leg is SHORT OF THE POCKET; 0.62 to 0.705 inclusive is IN THE POCKET; a close beyond 0.886 is PAST THE 886. Between 0.705 and 0.886 is past the pocket but not through the 886: the idea is still alive and the location is gone, so it reads SHORT OF THE POCKET — the answer is still "not here yet".
- **Why it matters at the trade** — Decision: look for the trade in the pocket, wait if price is short of it, and drop the idea entirely past the 886. A level that tells you when to stop looking is worth more than one that tells you where to enter.
- **What it doesn't say** — The pocket is location, not a trade. It says where to look, not that the trigger has fired (Point at the bar), not that the stop survives the noise (Stop vs noise), not that the target has room (Runway). Price can reach the pocket and keep going; the 886 is where you find out.
- **M** — The median high-to-low range of the last 20 bars. Every distance here is in M; the reveal gives the distance from the last close to the pocket in M. The number for the current chart is on the screen.
- **Confidence is a number** — Low means 40%, Medium 65%, High 90% that your call is right. Scored Brier-style: sure and wrong costs 0.81, unsure and wrong costs 0.16, sure and right costs 0.01. Being certain is as expensive as being wrong.

## The read

One close against a shaded band and one line. Is the last close short of the pocket, inside it, or through the 886?

## The rep

Forty to sixty bars, frozen on the last one. The impulse leg with both swings marked, the five levels drawn across the retracement, the pocket shaded, nothing labelled. M is stated. The question, in full: **"The impulse is marked and the levels are drawn. Where is the last close? SHORT OF THE POCKET, IN THE POCKET, or PAST THE 886?"** with a confidence.

## The reveal

The chart again with the levels labelled and the last close carried across, then the next 20 bars. The banner, the answer, the retracement as a fraction of the leg, the distance from the last close to the pocket in M, the verdict, and one takeaway line. Templates:

- SHORT OF THE POCKET, short of it: **"Retraced {r} of the leg. Not deep enough. The people who chased the impulse are not offside yet."**
- SHORT OF THE POCKET, past it: **"Retraced {r} of the leg. Past the pocket, short of the 886: the idea is alive and the location is gone. Still not here."**
- IN THE POCKET: **"Retraced {r}. This is the location. Now the trigger has to confirm it — location alone is not a trade."**
- PAST THE 886: **"Closed beyond the 886. This is not a deep retracement, it is a failed one. The idea is dead; there is no better entry further up."**

Every rep ends on one of these four lines. Each is a decision: look here, wait, or stop looking. Then what the next 20 bars did, in M from the last close. No percentage is shown anywhere.

## Answer key

`r = (end − lastClose) / (end − start)` for an impulse up, `(lastClose − end) / (start − end)` for an impulse down, where `start` is the low (high) of the swing that started the leg and `end` the high (low) of the swing that ended it.

- **SHORT OF THE POCKET**: r < 0.62, or 0.705 < r ≤ 0.886.
- **IN THE POCKET**: 0.62 ≤ r ≤ 0.705.
- **PAST THE 886**: r > 0.886.

The three answers come up a third each (config); about a third of the SHORT reps sit between 0.705 and 0.886. Nothing but the last close against the levels carries the case: not the leg's length or direction, not the bar counts, not the opening's regime, not where the pocket sits on the screen.
