# Effort versus result — lesson

Gym heading: Situational awareness. Written before the code (Sep 8 2026), from the trader's own framework in the Aug 30 2026 transcript: this is the trigger, the last 5 to 10% of the trade; everything else is the other 95%. It is the Absorption module the Sep 6 spec left waiting for a definition. The teach screen shows this text; the answer key implements the rule in it and nothing else. Harness, confidence, persistence and reveal format follow stop-vs-noise; the ten bars leading in come from point-at-the-bar's generator v2. The signal bar's ladder is a new rendering, the first in the gym that is not a candle.

Choices made where the handoff was silent:

- The ladder is per tick: 0.25 points a row (config). The signal bar is drawn so that it spans 8 to 36 rows; a bar outside that is rebuilt, whatever its case. Every price on the chart is snapped to the tick so the ladder's rows and the bar's open, high, low and close line up.
- "The top third" is every row whose price is at or above the low plus two thirds of the bar's range. "Strongly positive" is a delta share of 0.30 or more at those rows: aggressive buys are at least 65% of the volume traded there. "Near flat" is anything under 0.30. One threshold, so the rule is total; a share of the reps (config: drill 0.15, holdout 0.25) sits within 0.05 of it on purpose, and the reveal shows the number either way.
- Close position is (close − low) / (high − low), read at two decimals. The lower half is 0.50 or under; the upper quarter is 0.75 or over. A strong stack with a close between those two lines (0.51 to 0.74) is neither paid nor absorbed. It is ambiguous by design, never authored, and scores as NOTHING: the decision it feeds is the same one, hands off.
- The bar sits at the extreme of a location: for the top of a move, its high is the highest high of the eleven bars on the screen, poked above the lead-in's ceiling; the bottom of a move is the mirror. Which extreme is read off the bars, never told: the bar that makes the new high is read at its high, the bar that makes the new low at its low. Half the reps are at a top, half at a bottom (config).
- The candle's shape is drawn without looking at the case. Its range, where it opened inside that range, its lead-in and its volume silhouette come from the same distributions for all three cases. Only the close position and the delta are the case: absorption and effort paid share one ladder and differ in the close; nothing shares its closes with both of them (half in the lower half, half in the upper quarter) and differs in the delta. A close in the lower half is therefore absorption or nothing, a close in the upper quarter effort paid or nothing, and no shape is one case alone. The harness reports the overlap: the body, range, wicks and colour per case, and the best a guess from the candle alone can do (two in three from the close position, the ceiling the rule's own close test sets; a third, no better than chance, from everything else).
- Volume is in contracts. The bar's total, its POC and how its volume spreads across its rows are drawn without looking at the case: a heavy stack at the high with a flat delta is a two-sided fight and says NOTHING; a light stack with buyers at 80% of it is effort. The read is the delta, not the size.
- The next 20 bars are drawn with an outcome rate that is a config constant and is never shown. The reveal says where price ended against the signal bar's extreme, in M, and whether a close ever took that extreme out. No percentages anywhere.
- The lead-in is generator v2's pre-line phase: a leg into the level, a rotation below it, or a rotation and then a leg (family shares); the last ten bars of it are what is shown. The level itself is not drawn.
- Soft clock 10 seconds: a ladder takes longer than a candle.

Persistent header: **"Training your eye for whether the aggressors are getting paid."**

## Before you fade

- **Effort** — Effort is how hard one side is trading: the aggressive volume, the contracts that lifted the offer or hit the bid. The ladder beside the signal bar shows it at every price the bar traded, split into aggressive buys and aggressive sells.
- **Result** — Result is whether price moved. Read them together and the same candle means two opposite things.
- **Absorption** — Aggressive buyers stacking at the high of a bar with no upward progression means someone passive is selling into all of it. That is absorption, and the buyers who paid up are now the trapped side. In numbers: at the rows in the top third of the bar's range, aggressive buys are at least 65% of the volume (a delta share of 0.30 or more), and the bar closed in its lower half (close position 0.50 or under).
- **Effort paid** — Aggressive buyers stacking at the high WITH price progressing means they are being rewarded and there is nothing in their way. In numbers: the same stack in the top third, and the bar closed in its upper quarter (close position 0.75 or over), at or near the high.
- **Nothing** — No one side stacked at the extreme: the delta share in the top third is under 0.30, whichever way it leans and wherever the bar closed. There is no effort, so there is no result to judge. A strong stack with a close between the half and the upper quarter is not a result either way and reads the same: nothing.
- **The mirror** — At the bottom of a move, read the bottom third: aggressive sells at 65% or more of the volume there is the stack; a close in the upper half is absorption (the sellers who paid down are trapped), a close in the lower quarter is effort paid.
- **Why it matters at the trade** — Decision: absorption at the extreme of a location is the confirmation to trade against the aggressors. Effort that gets its result is a reason to do nothing: the context and the location can both be right and the trade still does not exist. All three have to be there: context, location, confirmation. When the aggressors are getting paid, you sit on your hands and let it go.
- **What it doesn't say** — This is the last 5 to 10% of the trade. It says nothing about whether the context was right (Structure, Efficiency), whether the location was one (Value, Session VWAP, Fresh or burned), whether the stop survives the noise (Stop vs noise) or whether there is room (Runway). It says whether, at this extreme, the aggressors got paid.
- **The ladder** — One row per tick. Dark to the left is aggressive selling at that price, light to the right is aggressive buying; the number at the right is the row's delta, buys minus sells. The heaviest row is the bar's POC. O, H, L and C are marked. Nothing after the signal bar is shown; what follows is the reveal.
- **M** — The median high-to-low range of the last 20 bars. The bar's range is stated in M, and the reveal measures what followed in M. The number for the current chart is on the screen.
- **Confidence is a number** — Low means 40%, Medium 65%, High 90% that your call is right. Scored Brier-style: sure and wrong costs 0.81, unsure and wrong costs 0.16, sure and right costs 0.01. Being certain is as expensive as being wrong.

## The read

Two things. Effort: is one side stacked at the extreme third of the bar? Result: where did the bar close against that stack? Stacked and closed away from it is absorption. Stacked and closed on it is effort paid. Not stacked is nothing.

## The rep

The ten bars leading into the signal bar as candles, the signal bar itself beside them magnified as a per-price ladder: volume at each price split into aggressive buys and aggressive sells, the delta per row, the bar's POC, and its open, high, low and close marked. M is stated. The question, in full: **"This bar is at the extreme of the move. What happened in it?"** Absorption, Effort paid, or Nothing, with a confidence.

## The reveal

The ladder again with the extreme third shaded and the half and quarter lines drawn; the Correct / Incorrect banner; the answer and its takeaway; the delta at the extreme (contracts each side and the share) and the close position in the range; then the next 20 bars as candles, showing what followed. Templates (top of a move; the bottom mirrors buying to selling and high to low):

- Absorption: **"{N} contracts of aggressive buying at the high, and the bar closed in the lower half. Someone passive sold all of it. The buyers who paid up are the trapped side, and they are the fuel."**
- Effort paid: **"{N} contracts of aggressive buying at the high, and the bar closed on the high. They are getting paid. There is nothing in their way — this is a reason to stand aside, not to fade."**
- Nothing: **"No one stacked at either extreme. There is no effort here, so there is no result to judge. The bar says nothing."**
- Nothing, stacked but closed in the middle (never authored, the rule's line for completeness): **"{N} contracts of aggressive buying at the high, and the bar closed in the middle of its range: neither paid nor absorbed. The bar says nothing yet."**

Every rep ends on one of these lines. Each is a decision: trade against the trapped side, or sit on your hands. Then where the next 20 bars went, in M. No win percentage is shown anywhere.

## Answer key

Rows: every tick from the bar's low to its high. `top` is the rows at or above `low + 2/3 × (high − low)` for a bar at the top of a move (the bar whose high is the highest of the eleven); `bottom`, the rows at or below `high − 2/3 × (high − low)`, for the bar at the bottom. `deltaShare = (buys − sells) / (buys + sells)` over those rows, signed toward the aggressors' side (buys at a top, sells at a bottom). `closePos = round2((close − low) / (high − low))`, measured from the extreme: at a top as written, at a bottom as `1 − closePos`.

`stacked = deltaShare ≥ 0.30`. `ABSORPTION = stacked AND closePos ≤ 0.50`. `EFFORT PAID = stacked AND closePos ≥ 0.75`. `NOTHING` otherwise (not stacked; or stacked with a close between the lines, which is never authored).

Three cases a third each (config). Half the reps at a top, half at a bottom. Reported: the aggressive volume each side in the extreme third, the delta share, the close position, the bar's range in M, and what the next 20 bars did.
